Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) for Fourth Grade
At Aunt Jan's porch, you will observe the working
combination of a wheel, axel, lever, and screw that form a spinning wheel as you
watch Aunt Jan illustrate the operation of the wheel to spin fibers into a
yarns. She will show you how the amount of force she exerts upon treadle
directly affects the speed and motion of the drive wheel. You will also
learn how a single wheel and axel are used to spin fiber into yarn by hand.
(GPS # S4P3 - a, b, & c) When you visit the
Bee Barn, Herb, Sun Dial, and Water Gardens, you will observe producers,
consumers, and decomposers in the honeybee community. You will be able to
follow the flow of energy through the food chain beginning with the plants and
progressing through the harvest and consumption of the honey. In the Bee
Barn, you will be told how weather conditions, parasites, and disease can affect
the ecosystem of the plants and organisms, including the honeybees, that depend
upon them for their survival. In addition to these locations, at the
Petting Zoo and in the Bat theater, you will learn about features of organisms
and external factors that directly affect the survival of those organisms.
(GPS # S4L1 - a, b, c, & d; S4L2 - a & b; QCC 23 & 24)
On your tour of the farm, you will learn about the effects of pollution on the
habitats of the plants and animals and will be shown how Uncle Bob's helps
protect the environment through recycling of feed bags and mulch to conserve
water, use of drip irrigation to conserve water, recycling of animal wastes as
natural fertilizer to replenish soil nutrients, and the rotation of crops to
avoid soil depletion, erosion, and run off into adjacent property and bodies of
water. (QCC 25 &26) |
